July is finally here and Brevard, North Carolina has plenty of events planned to make your Summer awesome! This year the town is having weekly events, along with many special events throughout the month. These events range anywhere from calm and relaxing live music, to adventurous bike rides through the mountains! Below is a condensed list of events that will take place every week throughout this month.
Monday
At 5pm on Mondays, head on over to Oskar Blues Brewery for the Otto Wood Mountain Jam. This live music jam will take place from 5:00pm to 8:00pm every Monday night except for the third Monday of the month. Enjoy a great local brew while relaxing to the sounds of Brevard’s best local bands. There is no better way to spend a warm Monday night this Summer!
Tuesday
Bring your kids to the Co-Ed Cinema at 10:00am for a free movie on Tuesdays. Seating is given on a first come, first served basis. Later in the afternoon head on over to the Brevard Courthouse for the old time street dances. Dancing begins at 6:30 and the fun is free!
Wednesday
The Pisgah Astronomical Research Institute will be opening the facilities for others to “experience the wonders of scientific research first hand” on Wednesday afternoons. This event will begin at 2pm and a $5 donation is suggested. Wednesday night is also open mic night at Trailblazers Bar and Grill. The singing will begin at 8:00pm; this is something that you don’t want to miss!
Thursday
The Co-Ed Cinema will again be showing free movies to children at 10:00am on Thursdays. The Cradle of Forestry will also be holding classes for kids at 10:30am, 12:00pm, and 1:30pm. These classes are for children between the ages of 4 and 7, and the cost is $4 per child and $2.50 for adults; not a steep price to have your child experience Woodsy Owl’s Curiosity Club! These classes are designed to engage children in a forest environment with fun activities to teach them about the world around them. Sycamore Cycles will also be hosting bike rides from 6:00pm to 8:00pm.
Friday
Friday night is karaoke night at Trailblazers Bar and Grill. So swing by between 10:00pm and 2:00am to relax, grab a bite to eat, and listen to the local talent!
Saturday
Sycamore Cycles will be hosting another bike ride every Saturday morning. The Spin N’ Grin Road Bike Ride will begin at 8:00am from the Comporium Parking lot. This 27.6 mile ride will take you through some of Brevard’s most picturesque roads. The Transylvania Farmers Market also takes place every Saturday morning between 8:00am and 12:00pm The market is held behind Comporium. This quaint little market offers home-grown fruits, organic vegetables, locally-made arts and crafts, wines, honey, jellies, and much more! Also, don’t miss the wine tasting at Broad Street Wines between 2:00pm and 5:00pm.; free music is also held at the Courthouse Gazebo from 7:00pm to 9:00pm.
Sunday
On Sundays The Hub will be hosting group mountain bike rides at 5:00pm while the Hob Nob Restaurant will be having Sunday jazz on the porch.
This is the tentative weekly schedule for the events that will take place throughout July. Along with this schedule are plenty of special events that you are going to want to know about.
On July 11 the Glass Feather will be hosting a class on how to fuse glass. Registration for this class is required, so go to www.glassfeather.com to find out more.
On July 13, at the Cradle of Forestry, a naturalist will be describing the nocturnal activities of moths, bats, and owls. The Winged Creatures of the Night Twilight Tour will be between 7:30pm and 9:00pm; admission is $6 for adults and $3 for youth.
The Pisgah Center for Wildlife Education will hold a class on outdoor photography for beginners on July 19. This class is for anyone age 14 and up. It will teach the basics of outdoor photography and you can even use your own camera! For more information on this class, and how to register for it, call 828-877-4423.
On July 20, Bamert will conduct Beethoven at the Brevard Music Center at 5pm and 7:30pm. Matthias Bamert will lead the Brevard Sinfonia, this is a wonderful event that you do not want to miss! There will also be a ballroom dance club meeting from 6:00pm till 10:00pm at the Glen Cannon Country Club. Music by Deano and the Drifters will be played.
Garrison and the Prairie Gang will be coming to Brevard on July 23 for their 2013 tour. Don’t miss A Prairie Home Companion With Garrison Keillor. It will be held at 7:30pm and the Brevard Music Center. This live radio show is one of the most listened to public radio shows in the United States! This show is famously known for its musical guests.
On July 25 the Cedar Mountain Community Center will come alive at 10:30am with the sound of children. For $14 a child they can experience the Junior Puppet Camp and build their own marionette puppet! Adults will not be charged for attending this event. Registration is required and this camp is for children between the ages of 3 and 7.
On July 26 the town will be holding the 4th Friday Gallery Walk. Between 5:00pm and 9:00pm you can walk through downtown Brevard to explore galleries, restaurants, and retail shops. Stroll on over to Main Street Ltd, and Broad Street Wines, for free wine tastings!
On July 27 the Pisgah Center for Wildlife Education will be investigating the Davidson River for aquatic macroinvertebrates. Don’t miss this great opportunity for children and adults ages 12 and up. July 27 is also Train History Day, so when you get done exploring the river, head on over to the Cradle of Foresty to learn about the Climax Logging Locomotive!
