Jump Off Rock
Jump Off Rock is open throughout the year and allows you breathtaking views of the Blue Ridge Mountains. Its unique name was born out of legend. History tells of a young, Indian maiden who leaped to her death from this exact location. Distraught over the death of her husband in war, this young woman decided to join him in death. Her body was eventually found by tribesman. However, legend also tells that her ghost can be seen atop Jump Off Rock during a full moon.
Visitors can also traverse one of three trails that surround this historical site. Each trail is rated by difficulty, is color coded and designed to accommodate beginner, intermediate and advanced fitness levels.
DuPont State Recreational Forest
DuPont Forest comprises more than 10,000 acres of nature’s finest real estate. It covers two counties and is perfect for a complete day with nature. The forest has several different waterfalls that serve as the perfect backdrop to a romantic afternoon or family picnic. The falls are exceptionally beautiful during the rainy season.
Popular activities at DuPont include hiking and biking on a number of trails that run throughout the forest. Many trails lead to spectacular, breathtaking views of the Blue Ridge and surrounding mountains. Horseback riding is also popular throughout the park.
